Virginia Opossums are extremely resistant to rabies

It is thought that perhaps due to the opossum’s lower body temperature than the average mammal, it is more difficult for the rabies virus to reproduce and cause disease. Opossums are also immune to snake bite venom, carrying a venom-neutralizing peptide in their blood. Opossums and possums are both marsupials (pouched mammals), but are not closely related. The Virginia Opossum is the only marsupial north of Mexico in the Americas. It was introduced to the west coast of the U.S. during the Great Depression as a source of food for humans.
