The oldest fossil is a jaw found in Australia. Up until 1938, when a live individual was found, we had thought they’d gone extinct around 70 million years ago. Coelacanths can reach up to 200 pounds (91kg) and more than six feet (1.8m) in length. The two living species are related to a primitive line of lobe-finned fish. The fish rest in sea caves during the day, and passively feed on other fish and cephalopods at night. They may recognize other coelacanths using electric communication.
